If you are purchasing a new/used home you may be considering purchasing new kitchen cabinets, but you might be surprised at how cost effective it is to paint your existing cabinets and replacing the hardware vs buying all new cabinets.
New kitchen cabinets are expensive and can end up costing you anywhere between $15,000 – $20,000 depending on your kitchen – not to mention the cost of tearing out your old cabinets and having to live in a construction zone. But for a fraction of the cost and you can use the same cabinets in your kitchen and simply have them cleaned, de-greased, painted and have new hinges and hardware added and you wouldn’t even know the difference other than in your wallet!
How To Paint Kitchen Cabinets Properly
Painting kitchen cabinets is a tedious, labor intensive process. Primer and paint may be applied by sprayer, brushes, or rollers (often it is a combination of these). First, hardware must be removed from drawers and doors. Second, drawers and doors are removed and taken to a room where they can be painted (garage, unfinished basement area).
Next, a light sanding is usually necessary and then primer application. After the primer has had ample time to dry the paint is then applied. After the paint dries the drawers and doors can be put back in place and the hardware reattached. Any touch ups may be performed at this time. There are many ways to complete this type of project, but this process usually yields the best results.
